Flipping the bird is about how a performer "Flipped the bird" during a performance. In this article it explains others mixed feeling about this event. They go on to explain that "Flipping the bird doesn't mean what is used to and how people now days use it as an insult towards people they are angry with. Unlike back in tie when i didn't mean necessarily a bad thing.
ReplyDeleteThis article about "Flipping the bird" doesn't affect me like most. Because most people think that it was such a bad thing she did that in public i don't really think it matters as much as they think it does. People are free to do what they want as long as it doesn't break any laws and the last time i checked this was not one of them. Unless this sign was pointed directly at you i don't feel like they have a reason to get as mad as they did. This sign doesn't always mean bad it can just be a symbol people use. Or maybe it went with the song or performance they were doing. You can't judge someone without knowing there reason for doing what they are doing.
The article "Flipping the Bird" is about the singer M.I.A. using her middle finger when she performed during the halftime show at the Super Bowl a couple years ago. Many people had mixed feelings about her actions. Some thought it was appropriate and some thought it was inappropriate and some couldn't decide. There has been research about "flipping the bird" and that in ancient rome it wasn't a problem and now a days people use it in anger towards each other.
ReplyDeleteThe article "Flipping the Bird" doesn't really matter to me. Many people thought it was the worst thing someone could do on national television because it was provocative and rude. I believe that she shouldn't have done that but she is her own person and can do whatever she wants, she just has to know the consequences that may follow after her actions.I think that some people may have overreacted as much as they did. Although her actions were bad to some people it could be part of what she does because she could be from rome or know Roman history and know that in Rome its not a bad thing. It also could be part of the dance, so its not even her own fault, it could be the choreographers fault. You never know the meaning of what something does without hearing it from them, so don't judge within two seconds.
The Flipping the Bird article is about the M.I.A using her middle finger during a super bowl at halftime. Some people said that it really didn't bother them. Other with small children where worried about their kids following in her foot steps and doing the same thing to them. A long time ago it was just a sign for anger in ancient rome for anger and that was what she was trying to get across but to a lot of people it came across diffently.
ReplyDeleteThe flipping the bird does matter to me because it affected so many people. They also did not get across her point and she had lots of parents of small people mad at her. She can be her own person but I believe that she did it in front or the wrong group of people. I also think that it is uncool that she made a lot of people angry. I know if I were a parent and we where trying to watch the game and then all of the sudden M.I.A. was pointing her middle finger I would not feel comfortable with my kids watching her. It also shows how bad she wanted to offend everybody. This is how I feel about the flipping the bird article.
The article "Flipping the Bird" is about the singer M.I.A. using her middle finger when she performed during a halftime performance at the Super Bowl. Most of the audience had mixed feelings about M.I.A. "flipping the bird" during the performance. Some couldn't decide if it was intended what others thought it was. Overall it probably wasn't the right decision for her to do it because many people got confused what her intentions were.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion the topic of the article "flipping the bird' doesn't bother me. I think that people have the right to get upset at her doing this is they have children watching or they think it is really disrespectful. I partially think this is true but in this case I don't think these were her intentions. I think that if she truly didn't think this would cause anything bad that is why she would do it. Overall I don't think this was bad at all.
Sum:The article "Flipping the bird" is about the fact that using your middle finger is not what it used to be which was a symbol for something other than anger now it is a way to show your anger and frustration seen when M.I.A. showed her middle finger to the audience at the super bowl but today it has become so mainstream that it is no longer a problem to many people but other people still see it as a sign of obscenity and disrespect.
ReplyDeleteRes:In my opinion the article made complete sense the middle finger has been used so much by so many people of all ages that it is not that big of a deal I myself did not see the performance but I know that there had to be at least one person who was not affected by it although I also understand people not wanting to see that as many most likely had small children with them who may pick that up from her which would be difficult to deal with as a parent.
Flipping the bird is an article referring to M.I.A. showing her middle finger during her performance at the halftime show of the Superbowl a few years ago. The article explains that the middle finger gesture isn't nearly as obscene as it used to be. In the past, the middle finger has been seen by a very disrespectful gesture, but it's become so commonly used that it is no longer as powerful.
ReplyDeleteI thought "Flipping the Birds" was interesting. It made me realize how much people really do use the middle finger and how much it is losing it's original meaning. I still don't think it was right for her to do that in front of millions of people. No matter how often it's used, some parents still don't want their kids to see it, and people like M.I.A. should respect that. I don't think she should get in any trouble for what she did, but I think she should know that it was a bad idea and she should not do it again.
Flipping "The Bird" is a article referring to the M.IA of an artist showing her middle finger in public. This articled created a lot of controversy whether is it right to do it. During a super bowl an artist showed her middle finger, which created controversy because people now think that it is something normal, rather than something insulting. Showing your middle finger isnt obscene anymore. This article explains why is it wrong and why is it ok.
ReplyDeleteI thought the article flipping the birds was entertaining and made you think your own opinion. I do believe that this should be considered as something obscene because it can still be insulting even though society doesnt look at it that way. I think the article is well written, it was a good point of view and debates both points of views. I dont think that this is correct because it was on a sports event where everyone watches so it isnt so appropiate for all ages. People these days do it so often that now it doesnt seem so bad, even though I do believe it is really bad. If right now flipping the bird is now normal, I wonder what will be normal in the future. It is an interesting article
The article "Flipping the Bird" explains that raising the middle finger towards a person or a crowd does not have the same meaning it had in the early days. During halftime of the super bowl, a famous artist named M.I.A flipped her middle finger up to the audience, yet no one showed any sign of being disturbed by it. American University Law Professer, Ira Robins, discusses the fact that flipping the middle finger isn't the same anymore. Now a days, raising the middle finger is a common thing many people do, whereas before, the middle finger was a sign of disrespect towards another person(s).
ReplyDeleteIn my perspective, the article "Flipping the Bird," was well written and proved a strong point about the action of raising the middle finger. I agree the action is demonstrated more than it should be in society, and it is used for inappropriate purposes like raising it without a reason. I also concur the gesture is used as a sign of frustration, but I think it is used more commonly for picture poses and other things related to that. The more I ponder about it, it is a mystery of what is to become common later on. If flipping the middle finger up came a normal thing these days, it is only the beginning of more disrespectful actions becoming natural to society.
On "All Things Considered" a law professor argues that flipping the bird is not that bad. Flipping the bird used to mean showing a body part. Now it means to show anger or rage. Ira Robbins states that it's not obscene but is just part of our culture now.
ReplyDelete" Flipping the bird" does affect me in a negative way if someone is directing it to me. When a performer flips the bird at their audience they are being disrespectful. I personally think they don't have to flip the bird to get their point across if the song already says it. I think performers should have freedom to express themselves but it's not what I want to see.
From the NPR post "Flipping the Bird" contains the idea of whether or not flipping the bird is still obscene or not. While reading this brief article it it gives two point of views about flipping the bird, one being a phallic symbol and another being a symbol to portray rage and frustration. The article originates from the famous artist “M.I.A.” who flipped the bird while performing live on national tv.
ReplyDeleteI think that flipping the bird isn’t really a symbol of rage and frustration and should not be taken that way. Now-a-days people don't really use the bird as a symbol towards another person to show disrespect and rather verbally say words towards another person to get their point across.
Flipping “The Bird” was an article full of many many many opinions, what the reporter was trying to convey was that many people use the middle finger, but is it really appropriate? Is it appropriate for parents who bring their kids to games and concerts seeing the role model?
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I don’t really think it matters, whether or not people start sueing each other, and pressing charges over a finger, I don’t really think that it means that much. Yeah it is important to not set off a bad example for younger kids, but in reality, will they really know what it means? I don’t know. And why make it illegal? like this is something you literally cannot control, people flip each other off all the of the time! While driving especially. But thats my opinion.
The infamous NPR talk show "All Things Considered" tells us the facts on M.I.A.'s act of "Flipping the Bird" at the supper bowl. They bring a law professor in to get the truth can M.I.A. be sued and is it legal? The law professor claims she can be sued and in the past the majority of defendants have won for a settlement of up to $50,000. He claims it is a constitutional right and is legal.
ReplyDeleteI believe "Flipping the Bird" is not as bad as portrayed to be by society. It is also very amusing that it was M.I.A. because she is a artist that believes in what she says. I believe my brother said it perfect with "Oh that is just grand.".
The article "Flipping the Bird" explains how M.I.A's action, of flipping her middle finger at the halftime show, could be obscene or whether it is a "part of mainstream American culture". The author of this article is portraying the act of showing the middle finger in the ancient Rome era and now. Is M.I.A's action inappropriate for families who are enjoying this halftime show? Is it just a part of moder American culture?
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I think that M.I.A's action of flipping off the crowd during the half time show at the super bowl was a little bit out of hand, but not necessarily unexpected. The famous singer's action was not based out of rage or anger, in my opinion. I think that she did this to make a point to the people watching this show. Honestly, to me it doesn't matter, in the everyday world you will see this action left and right meaning different things, to see it one more time would not make a whole lot of difference to me.
Flipping "The Bird" was an article pushing viewers kinda against flipping people off. This gesture is used very often, Ira Robins shares through out. He shares about different people using the gesture, and the consequences of it. He shares about his opinion of the gesture being "obscene", and trys to make sense of it all.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading and listening to Flipping "The Bird" I am shocked flipping people off is not illegal everywhere, because I always thought of it as a inapropriete gesture. My opinion over all is that the gesture should not be used anywhere, let alone at a popular sports cast. I never knew people would accept this in society and I find it sad. Overall it was a weird and tense topic.
"Flipping the Bird", a National Public Radio article, begins with describing pop star M.I.A 's actions at the 2012 Super Bowl. This article explains how "Flipping the Bird" has become less and less of an "obscene and risque" action over the years. Law professor Ira Robbins discusses different scenarios in which people have "Flipped the Bird", showing how it's not as big of a deal as it was many years ago. Along with this, he mentions that this act is constitutional and completely legal, even if it's directed toward an official. This article also gives famous examples of "bird flippers", such as Johnny Cash and Lady Gaga.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I believe "Flipping the Bird" is not obscene what so ever in today's society. This is a rude gesture, but not obscene. At first I wasn't sure why this was even a topic to discuss in the first place, but after listening for a little longer, I became interested. It has come to my attention that "Flipping the Bird" is so commonly used by people of all ages, that I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't found offensive at all in the next few years. I was quite shocked that M. I. A 's action was considered obscene. Celebrities these days do things so much worse than "Flipping the Bird" in front of just as many if not more people. Overall, this was a great article to read, as it really got me thinking about today's society.
'Flipping the Bird' is an article recently released by National Public Radio. This article deals with the musician M.I.A's 'flipping the bird' incident during the Super Bowl's half time event this past year. Many people saw the display and went into an uproar against the artist, even though this is a staple of her live shows. Dr. Ira Robbins was in fact on the side of M.I.A, saying that the middle finger hand gesture had lost most of the obscenity it held 100 years ago. He even gave examples of famous people that gave the finger, such as Johnny Cash.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, 'Flipping the Bird has lost almost all of its obscenity in a 100 year period. While it is a rude and uncalled for gesture, it is not as obscene as it is made out to be. This is a finger for sanity's sake, its not like Justin Beiber stepping on an American flag, because that isn't just rude, its disrespectful. Over all, this was and interesting article providing a different view of a fairly old topic. It made me think of the fact that one little finger can cause such an uproar in stead of an accident or a hit -and-run.
flipping the bird was short article about singer M.I.A exposing her middle finger to the world during the super bowl halftime show. not alot of people were angry about this. Statistics at the bottom of the article actually showed that more than 80% of the people that saw this wern’t upset at all.a law professor says it was ok because that was just her releasing her anger to protest or disdain.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion M.I.A flipping off the crowd wasn’t really that big of a deal. I remember actually watching the halftime show and I don’t recall her flipping off the crowd to stand out that much at all. I think people are making this a way bigger deal than it should. I bet 90 percent of the people that heard read this article and watched the show never knew that ever happened before they read this article. And I can really agree on what the professor said. I don't think she flipped of the crowd to intentionally offend anyone, I think she just did that to show her rebeliance towards society.
In the article "Flipping the Bird" a law professor named Ira Robbins argues raising the middle finger has lost some of its obscenity over time. It used be a phallic symbol, dating back to Greek an Roman times, but now it has become a common symbol. It now has become a mainstream gesture for anger, frustration, or protest. The artist "M.I.A."'s use of it in the Super Bowl halftime show may be still be rude and inappropriate, but maybe not as obscene as it first seemed.
ReplyDeleteThe article "Flipping the Bird" raises a fair point on the middle finger and its obscenity. The law professor makes a strong case by pointing out it was a phallic symbol dating back to Roman times, but has lost that meaning. "M.I.A."'s use of the gesture in the Super Bowl halftime show was obviously not a phallic symbol but rather a symbol for anger and protest. This shows its mainstream use and proves Ira Robbins point.
In the article "Flipping 'The Bird'" the announcers talk about an incident that occurred during the Super Bowl. At the Super Bowl the British singer M.I.A. used a gesture that is considered obscene by most people. In the interview a Law professor talks about how the middle finger is used in history by the Greeks and other civilizations. He then explains his point of view about the gesture.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, this article was very interesting because of how it expresses interesting ideas and points of view. I believe that the points of view expressed are interesting because they prove that anything can be different to everyone and can develop ideas in other people. It was also interesting because it explains the uses of the middle finger in history. Finally, I believe that it is interesting because he explained some legal cases about people using there middle finger in obscene way.
at the Superbowl haft time show a singer used an inappropriate gesture. most people don't give it any thought and a very little amount of people care. and a very little amount "Don't Know" they talked to a man that told the interviewer that it is not illegal, but that it is illegal in some other parts of the country.
ReplyDeletei think that this is very inappropriate thing to do at a Superbowl. everyone is watching and everyone can see it and there are kids watching. it is really unfortunate that most people don't care. only a few people care about this madder. the problem is the media that we have now. i an one the few that cares because i think it is im mature.
"Flipping the bird" is an article that was released on a national public radio. M.I.A. was cough 'flipping the bird" at the super bowl half time. Dr. Ira Robbins also gave examples of other artists that gave the middle finger such as lady gaga and johnny cash.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I think that this was uncalled for at a super bowl half time or anytime. This was not appropriate for being a super bowl especially because they're were probably kids watching. This is very rude to all the people around! The super bowl is supposed to be a special event and this only happens once a year and you shouldn't ruin it.
In the NPR article "Flipping the Bird", MIA flipped the bird during the Super Bowl half time show. The article says that flipping the bird is an expression of frustration. The article suggests that flipping the bird does not mean what it used to.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I think that flipping the bird has lost its meaning, but it still isn't good to do. I don't think it was a terrible thing to do but it still shouldn't be done to children. I also don't think it should be done because some people still find it extremely inappropriate.
In the Article "Flipping the Bird" During the Half time, MIA is Flipping the Bird, the article says MIA showing her Emotions while Flipping the Bird.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion Flipping the Bird can be interpreted in different ways for many different people, I don't think Flipping the Bird is inappropriate nor acceptable. Flipping the Bird may be inappropriate for other age ranges, it will impact young Kids and parents with new born, but anyone older, they have seen it everywhere, so its not as effective.
In the Article Flipping the bird, MIA is "Flipping the Bird". the article states how this both inappropriate and okay with modern society.
ReplyDeleteI believe that "Flipping the bird" is a completely obscene gesture. It may be interpreted differently but it is totally inappropriate, and kid watch the half time. to older people it might phase them but younger kids can be "molded" quicker. I think it is whole unacceptible
The article “Flipping The Bird” describes how the meaning of the middle finger has changed over time. It talks about how it used to represent phallic symbol, but now means frustration or rage. It also touches the subject of how M.I.A flipped the bird during the halftime at the super bowl. Overall, it descuses the meaning of the middle finger and how it offects people.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I do not consider flipping the bird okay. I feel that M.I.A’s gesture at the super bowl was inappropraite and a gesture like that should not be broadcasted on live television. The meaning of the middle finger has changed but not in a good way. Overall, i think no one should ever “flip the bird” regardless of the meaning.
